Welcome to #1miriona a social media movement to engage a million Māori language supporters with te reo Māori content that people like, create and share online.
We’ve created this app #1miriona to help you prepare your pepeha, record and publish it on Facebook using the hashtag – #1miriona.
It’s aimed at helping learners of te reo Māori to get started and build confidence.
A pepeha is a statement of identity. It’s a tribal saying and how Māori introduce themselves on the marae or in a Māori setting, yet it is a formula that can be used by non-Maori.
A pepeha recites the whakapapa or genealogy of a person through their ancestral waka (canoe), maunga (mountain), awa (river), iwi (tribe), hapu (sub-tribe), wharenui (meeting house), marae (courtyard), and lastly whānau (family) and ingoa (names).
Some say pepeha can be seen as an ancient Global Positioning System(GPS) devised by our ancestors, coordinates to significant landmarks that re-connect us to our roots.
Disruption to traditional communities and language loss has seen the demise of pepeha, but through #1miriona and this app, it can be reclaimed.
The #1miriona app will help you to construct your pepeha, assist you with pronunciation, record and publish when you are confident to share.
This app complements the Facebook Pepeha Challenge and is a tool to help you get started with your te reo Māori journey, in a fun way.
